Rembrandt HARMENSZOON VAN RIJN (b. July 15, 1606, Leiden, Neth.--d. Oct. 4, 1669, Amsterdam), Dutch painter, draftsman, and etcher of the 17th century, a giant in the history of art. His paintings are characterized by luxuriant brushwork, rich colour, and a mastery of chiaroscuro. Numerous portraits and self-portraits exhibit a profound penetration of character. His drawings constitute a vivid record of contemporary Amsterdam life. @tito1655 Exactly right! Rembrandt's portraits have psychological complexity and profound emotional character. On top of this I think Rembrandt had deeply felt human sympathy for his subjects and understood suffering and sadness, which is apparent if you look into the eyes of many of his sitters.

Wonderful selection - nicely to see and explore, i especially like the music! Days ago i was in the Rembrandt Exhibition in the Vienna Albertina, faboulously! Really an old Master at its Best! There was insight in the life of this era, the hard working life of the rural population, wonderful landscapes of the Netherlands!
